Aphex twin has always been one of my first and main influences when it comes to electronic music. After his “comeback” and the great success of the last album Syro, I am enlightened that he teams up with artists like “>Squarepusher – to use robots in electronic music!
His last EP “Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt 2” (Part one is still missing!) which is out on Warp since yesterday is a collaboration with the creators from the dutch old-school robotics company “logos”.
In interviews founder Godfried-Willem Raes says Aphex Twin did approach logos already some time ago to request some hand made robots. Their collaboration resulted in several instruments, especially two robots called SNAR and HAT (Hit Any Thing). On the EP you can hear several tracks named after these instruments. What you can also hear are some automatic pianos and string robots. Whoohoo! As rumors go, Aphex twin is using the “disklavier” – a robotic piano by yamaha – which was probably already used on his album druqs.
Whats particular interesting about the logos foundation – apart from their constant nudity in their videos – is the open source character: on their homepage you can find plenty of technical details about the robots and how they were made!
